Strong and Natural-Looking Solutions

Crown treatment at DSA Dental Smile Art repairs teeth damaged by large cavities or trauma. Crowns are caps that give your teeth a natural appearance and restore their function.

If the root of the tooth cannot be saved, dental implant treatment may be considered instead of a crown.

What Is a Dental Crown and When Is It Needed?

A crown is a restoration that covers the visible part of the tooth above the gum line, like a cap, both protecting it and restoring its original appearance. Crowns are made from zirconia or porcelain in our own laboratory.

When is a crown needed?

  • Teeth that have had root canal treatment and are at risk of fracture
  • Loss of tooth structure too large to repair with a filling
  • Broken or cracked teeth
  • Severely worn teeth
  • Crowns supported by implants
  • A bridge for a missing tooth (by crowning the neighbouring teeth)

Metal-free zirconia is usually the material of choice: it is strong, looks natural and is kind to the gums.

Free examination: the first examination, panoramic X-ray and, where needed, a 3D CT scan are free at our clinic. Your treatment plan and timeline are given to you in writing after the examination.

Our own laboratory: crowns and veneers are made in our in-house dental laboratory. At the try-in appointment, the dentist and technician check the shade, shape and fit on the same day, which shortens treatment and improves the fit.

TREATMENT PROCESS

Dental Crown Treatment Step by Step

1. Examination and X-ray
The condition of the root and surrounding tissue is assessed; if needed, root canal treatment or a filling is done first.
2. Preparing the Tooth
Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is reduced so that the crown will fit over it.
3. Impression and Temporary Crown
A digital impression is taken and a temporary crown is fitted on the same day.
4. Laboratory Production
The crown is made in our own laboratory to match the colour of the neighbouring teeth.
5. Try-in and Permanent Fitting
The crown is tried in and, once the fit and colour are approved, permanently bonded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dental crown?
A cap that covers the visible part of the tooth, protecting it and renewing its appearance; usually made from zirconia or porcelain.
Is a crown the same as a veneer?
No. A crown covers the visible part of the tooth, whereas a veneer is a thin shell bonded only to the front surface of the tooth.
How long does crown treatment take?
Usually 3–7 days, over 2–3 sessions.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel no pain. There may be brief sensitivity afterwards.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
It is recommended when a lot of tooth structure has been lost; root-filled teeth can be brittle, and a crown protects them.
How long does a crown last?
With good care and check-ups, many years.
Which material is used?
Mostly metal-free zirconia; porcelain depending on the case. Crowns are made in our own laboratory.
Can decay form under a crown?
It can if the crown margin is not kept clean. Regular brushing, flossing and a check-up every 6 months are important.
Do I have to pay for the examination?
No. The first examination and X-ray are free at our clinic.
