Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth (third molars) usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25. When there is not enough space in the jaw, they cannot fully erupt and remain partly or fully impacted.
When wisdom tooth removal is needed:
- Recurring gum inflammation, pain and difficulty opening the mouth (pericoronitis)
- Decay or root damage on the neighbouring tooth
- Risk of a cyst or tumour forming
- An orthodontic treatment plan
- Constant food trapping and bad breath because the area cannot be cleaned
Wisdom teeth that cause no problems, have come through properly and can be cleaned do not always need to be removed; the decision is made with an X-ray and, if needed, a 3D CT scan. CT scans are free at our clinic.
Free examination: the first examination, panoramic X-ray and, where needed, a 3D CT scan are free at our clinic. Your treatment plan and timeline are given to you in writing after the examination.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Detail
Removing wisdom teeth that cause problems involves several procedures: anaesthesia (usually local), surgical removal of the tooth and aftercare.
Why remove a wisdom tooth?
- Clears infection: removing an infected tooth stops the infection from spreading.
- Relieves pain: it effectively ends severe toothache.
- Protects your other teeth: it prevents damage to neighbouring teeth.
- Long-lasting solution: it restores your oral health for the long term.
